A jazz-rock fusion group created by John McLaughlin, influential from its creation in 1971 until it dissolved in 1976. Fusing a broad range of musical styles from funk to Indian classical music, the group is best known for 'The Inner Mounting Flame' and 'Birds of Fire'. McLaughlin reformed the group in 1984 with a different line up which lasted until 1987. Since then the group's influence and popularity has continued to grow.
